What is Grobo?
A source of great confusion, from where we sit.
Initially mistaking it for a long-ago, equally mysterious Simpsons reference, we dug into the press release to unlock some clues.
What we discovered: the full name of the device is Grobo One (that doesn’t help). It’s a “hydroponic” grow box. OK, I know hydroponic means “the process of growing plants in sand, gravel, or liquid, with added nutrients but without soil”; that sounds cool — it’s hard to get good soil when you live in a tiny New York apartment, amiright?
The device makes sure your plants are watered correctly while also controlling temperature, lights and humidity. Oh, and the glass even changes transparency to facilitate growth. Not much else. It’s a 14” x 14” x 4” box, Wifi-enabled to pair with a proprietary app that can control it remotely (just like Nest). Perhaps the motto gives something away … “Empower people to easily control what they consume, so that we can all live healthier lives.”
Hmmm. So, it’s an empowering food appliance? Cool? We guess?
Anyway, units are priced at $1,599 and start shipping today, April 20th. (Why today? Hmm. That could be a clue.)
Seems like a lot to grow your own kale, but hey, #YOLO.
