You may not recognize the name Ken Okuyama, but you are undoubtedly familiar with his work.
He’s designed cars for Ferrari, Porsche and Maserati, as well as redesigned American classics like the Camaro and the Corvette.
Now he’s moved on to bigger things — quite literally.
Japanese train operator JR East enlisted the design guru to help them create a 10-car luxury sleeper train complete with a dining room, lounge, glass-walled observation areas and enough space for 34 passengers.
Decked out in gold, glass and wood, the futuristic “Cruise Train” will be powered by a hybrid propulsion system that utilizes electricity when available and diesel in other circumstances and, once completed, will operate two-, three- and four-day seasonal tours, with journeys scheduled to begin next May.
Guests will stay in one of 15 standard suites or one of two luxury suite offerings, but accommodations won’t come cheap, with prices starting at $6,865 and topping out at $8,235.
Steep, sure, but substantially cheaper than buying one of Okuyama’s other creations.
