Most people are incentivized by money. Some prefer a little healthy competition to inspire motivation. This app satisfies both parties.

The ByCycling app is a new commute tracker that rewards employees who choose to bike to work. The cycling tracker utilizes an algorithm to log an employee’s speed and location. The program also links a rider’s account to other accounts within the company, encouraging users to compete with colleagues.

“We found that the two best motivators for people to even consider cycling to work are financial incentives and the social aspect of the initiative,” Jose Diaz, cofounder and CEO told Fast Company. “We found that 70% of the people think that the best incentive for them to ride to work is cash; 72% of people also believe that they do cycling to work initiatives because another colleague encouraged them to do so.”

The app allows for participating employees to choose their own reward, be it extra vacation time or cash. Most companies are shelling out about 25-30 cents for every mile, roughly equating to an average of $50 per month per employee.

The app is currently available on the App Store, with the Android version to follow on the foreseeable horizon.
