The small village of Vals, Switzerland is known for Therme Vals, a hotel and spa built over ancient hot springs. Even if you haven’t been, you still might recognize it. Now, after soaking in the Peter Zumthor-designed baths, you can hit the hay in rooms designed by him and other world-renowned architects.
7132 Hotel, renamed in reference to the postal code, commissioned Pritzker Architecture Prize winners Thom Mayne, Tadao Ando and Zumthor, along with Kengo Kuma, to design unique suites. Even if those names don’t ring a bell, you’ll be happy to find that the walls do the talking.
The rooms are located in a new addition to the hotel called the House of Architects. Mayne’s firm Morphosis is responsible for the lobby and entrance as well as four of the seven rooms.
The others took one room a piece, and all of them highlight a single material. ArchDaily points out these range from wood to stucco lustro to “locally quarried quartzite – the same material used by Zumthor in the adjacent Therme Vals spa.”
Needless to say, each of these rooms offer unique perspectives for taking in the surrounding Swiss Alps. But Mayne’s four suites have one thing in common: the “organically-shaped” all-glass shower smack dab in the middle of the bedroom.
