These Old Things? Just Five of the Best Steak Knives on Earth.

Because a steak is only as good as it cuts

First prize: Cadillac Eldorado.

Second prize: a set of steak knives.

Third prize: You’re fired.

There’s an argument to be made that second is the proverbial best here (it’s an argument that assumes you already have a better ride than an Eldorado, but bear with us).

You can’t have a good steak without a good steak knife. I mean, you could, but you’d be doing the meat a great disservice. Use a blunt blade and you’re gonna beat up the steak to get through it — juices lost, meat compressed, flavor diminished.

What you’re after is a hefty knife that feels balanced in the hand. Not so heavy so that your fellow diners may need to spot you, but weighty enough that the blade slices and guides you through the meat with self-assured grace. It also doesn’t hurt if it looks the part, too.

Below, five of our favorite edges for the next time steak’s on the menu.

R. Murphy Every Day Steak Knife
Featuring a gently curved handle with a smooth walnut grip and a stainless steel, hand-ground blade riveted to the full tang. Hard to beat in terms of price and value. BUY IT HERE

Opinel Bon Appetit Table Knife
From the same guys who make your favorite camp knife comes a colorful table knife set sharp enough to cut through your favorite meat with ease. Pretty as they are pointed. BUY IT HERE

Wustof Ikon Steak Knife
This is what you want if you’re looking to go full classic steakhouse at home. Each knife is German-made from a single piece of high-carbon steel, with a comfortable-to-grip handle that’s more than sturdy enough to handle all your meats. BUY IT HERE

Shun Classic Steak Knife
Japan’s sword-making tradition makes it one of the most respected knife producers in the world, and all that is on display with this stainless Damascus blade from Shun. Looking for a personal foldable steak knife? They make that, too.  BUY IT HERE

Bandsaw Blade Steak Knife
For a blade that’s decidedly more rustic, go for these knives made from carbon steel bandsaw blades salvaged from a furniture factory. Derelict? Yes. Super sharp and something your guests will talk about? Also yes. BUY IT HERE
