“Bare flesh bores men,” said Gypsy Rose Lee, one of history’s most famous burlesque performers. What she meant? The art of “disrobing gracefully” is more about the tease than the strip.

And while there’s certainly a time and place for full-on nudity — thank you, Emily Ratajkowski — it’s not always the worst thing in the world to leave a little to the imagination. For proof, take a look at this collection of photographs of 1960s striptease performer, burlesque dancers and adult entertainers, which was recently compiled by Dangerous Minds. (They are for the most part SFW, but proceed with caution.)

Note the creative use of tassels, boas and hand-bras to leave things (well, nipples) up to the imagination.

Guess some things never change.
