High Society

October 31, 2012 9:00 am

With whiskey, as with war, there are known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns.

But unlike war, the unfathomable depths of brown can be revealed by a single man, and you can learn from him if you join Seven Grand’s Whiskey Society.

Meeting monthly in the Jackalope Room, a dimly-lit room deco’d with antler wall mounts, the Whiskey Society is run by SG’s spirit guide, Pedro Shanahan, who calls each meeting to order with a glass of Brown Derby punch.

Shanahan (and occasional guest hooch masters) then leads the club through whiskey flights, with stories for each hooch, e.g., how Old Fitzgerald was founded by a treasurer who would sneak into his company’s rickhouse and remove barrels for himself.

Annual membership is $120 (so, $10 a session for very, very generous pours) and, while sessions are limited to 35 tipplers, your membership gives you first notice and the option of bringing any +1 you desire.

Members are also invited to special events at Seven Grand, and for $200 you can receive a private tasting for eight of your friends.

Now you know.
