It’s been said that the coldest winter a man can endure is a summer in San Francisco. But in L.A., we’ve been uncomfortably hot lately — a visit to SF is just what the doctor ordered.
Rather than hit the city proper, stay in a mansion in the cool-watered port of Sausalito, rent a boat and hike Angel Island.
Here’s how to do it right.
Stay
The newly opened Mansion at Casa Madrona is a shrine to bay views and opulence. Built into the hillside overlooking Richardson Bay, the patio walls fold away for an unobstructed panoramic reveal of the S.F. skyline, or, you know, fog — whichever’s in season. Amenities include a dedicated concierge, resplendent terraces and champagne delivery by drone.
Sail
The Sausalito waterfront has plenty to offer in the scenic grubbing department, but we suggest skipping the patios and taking your lunch picnic style, on the bow of a chartered yacht. We like this 43-footer operated by Captain Josh. As for the food, cruise by F3 on Caledonia for a puckish, haute-cuisine take on American takeout. Do the BOS if you’re the burgering sort.
Hike
Set aside some time in your messabout schedule to moor in Angel Island’s Ayala Cove and hike to the summit of Mt. Livermore. The trail is closed to bikes and those atrocious Segway tours, and the sights are the best in the Bay. Fun fact: the army chopped the mountaintop off in the ‘50s for a Nike Missile facility. Conservationists restored it a dozen years ago.
