A Day of Underground Eats With One of LA’s Best Chefs

Where Micah Wexler eats when not helming Wexler’s Deli

October 11, 2016 9:00 am

On any given day, we’re going to be doing a lot of eating. Likely some drinking too.

Lots of meals, lots of choices. In a town as big as ours, ruts will be carved (looking at you, turkey and cheddar wrap at Soda Pops). Which is why it pays to follow someone else’s grooves from time to time.

Someone like: Micah Wexler, the toque whose Wexler’s Deli has given Jewish soul food a much needed kick in the tuchis.

Here, Wexler shares his favorite places to eat when he’s not curing pastrami, boiling bagels and serving the classiest break-the-fast caviar this side of the Caspian.

Break-the-Fast Caviar: Wexler’s Deli

Those looking to class-up their break-the-fast should check out Wexler’s caviar special, which includes your choice of Oscietra, Siberian or Black River caviar, egg salad, capers and bagels and bagel chips. Those goys not breaking a fast: it never hurts to keep a tin of caviar in the fridge. The saltiness can really make for a subtle pop on seafood or eggs.

Brunch: Petrossian

“It’s the most under-the-radar brunch in the city so I almost don’t want to talk about it. Perfect omelettes with caviar, amazing French toast, and no lines; the best Sunday.”

Lunch: kazunori

“This place is my jam. I’m there about twice a week. It’s a two minute walk from GCM so I love to skip out for some hand rolls. Most people don’t know about it but the Yama imo with spicy cod roe is the best thing on the menu.”

Snacks: Beverly Hills Juice

“Juice is all over this city now but these guys are the OG’s and still the best. Apple/coconut/mint with banana mana almond is my go-to.”

Dinner: Terroni West Hollywood

“It’s my second home and I act like I own the place. I’m always happy with some eggplant involtini and spaghetti limone.”

Dessert: Go Greek

“I know this yogurt thing has been around for a while but I’ve been on the wedding diet and this place hits the spot. It tastes real because it is. I don’t mess with all the silly toppings, only Greek yogurt-chocolate swirl with fruit.”
