Surf and Turf

Ride waves. Then watch little men ride ponies.

From the driving, to the parking, to the not knowing where to drive or park, dinner in LA is harder than it should be. That’s why we created Dinner Plan — your weekly three-step itinerary to a damn good time.

This week, it’s surfing in Venice and watching the Kentucky Derby. Here’s your plan.

Go Surf LA

2030 Ocean Ave
Next to Hotel Casa del Mar
Meet in the lot near Lifeguard Tower 20
(310) 428-9870
$80

Go Surf LA

South swells are starting to break and it’s going to be in the 80s. Time to get wet. Not a surfer? Go Surf LA, helmed by surfing guru Peter Paris, has spent a decade in Santa Monica teaching novices how to pop and read the chops.

Here’s your plan.

Willie Jane

1031 Abbot Kinney Blvd
b/t Broadway and Westminister
(310) 392-2425

Willie Jane

After surfing, head to the verdant back porch at Willie Jane, the new resto from the Post & Beam guys. Their haute soul food has a Georgia low country flair, and this weekend they’ll have short ribs and mint juleps for the Kentucky Derby.

Here’s your plan.

The Otheroom

1201 Abbot Kinney Blvd
Corner of San Juan
(310) 396-6230

The Otheroom

A few blocks away, The Otheroom is home to beach bums, actors and lovers of valor-cloaked wrought-iron seats and craft beer. Windows open to the street, so you can watch the sun set to Fela Kuti. Careful: tread bevvies too long and you’ll find yourself in a scenester bloom.

Here’s your plan.
