Gents, grab your top hats and tailcoats. This regards the opera.
Well, not that opera. So scratch the formals. This is the Hopscotch Opera, which takes place all over the mean streets of DTLA. You hop in a limo with the performers and the story unfolds right in front of you, both in the car and at historic locations around the ‘hood.
Until today, the shows were entirely sold out. But they’re releasing tickets at 10 a.m. today for two additional showings — don’t be late.
Here’s what to expect day of, along with a great new spot near the show’s final curtain for your post-game.
Hopscotch Opera
350 Merrick Street
Hopscotch, the DTLA mobile opera/immersive theater experience, features more than 100 performers, musicians and artists and takes place at multiple historic locations. If you’re lucky enough to grab a ticket, you’ll be given an address at which a car will meet you the day of the performance. There will be singers and performers in that car, and you’ll accompany them to places like the Baldwin Building, Boyle Heights and Elysian Park.
There are three different routes to choose from, each comprising eight different chapters, so every attendee experiences a slightly different version of the narrative. Everyone ends up in the same place for the show’s finale.
If you can’t snag tickets, try stopping by The Central Hub, an interactive exhibit where you can watch all of the action unfold in real time on giant projector screens. Hopscotch Opera is the brainchild of The Industry, which put on last year’s Invisible Cities at Union Station.
Everson Royce Bar (aka ERB)
1936 E 7th Street
After the show, head over to ERB, a newly opened gastropub from a former Mozza mixologist. They’ve got a stellar walled-in patio in the back where you can dine on a straight-ahead cheeseburger or some soft pork buns. Drinks like the Paper Plane (bourbon, lemon, Aperol and Amaro Nonino) will keep your limbs loose. If you’re really trying to dial it up, go with a shot of Rittenhouse with a Modelo back.
